Yellow Quill Urban Services celebrates new home

The new Yellow Quill First Nation Urban Services office in Saskatoon was buzzing with people eating burgers, drinking tea and visiting. It was a celebration of the grand opening of a place Rose Campeau will likely be calling home for quite some time.
“We are excited to now have a new place for our urban members to come and access services,” said general manager Rose Campeau. The Urban Services had bounced around the city a few times in the past but finally found a home in the north end with a long term lease that lets the organization settle in a do what it does best. Help people.
“When our members come into the city they often don’t know where to go to get services. We provide the first contact here,” said Campeau. “We have applications here for housing and we assist with resumes and cultural activities and programs for youth.”
With over 1000 off reserve band members and real estate holdings and businesses in Saskatoon, Yellow Quill First Nation Chief John Machiskinic knows it is important to enhance the experience for members in the city.
“Our urban members need services too and this is the way to deliver them. Economic development is most important for our band members right now, especially for our youth,” said Chief Machiskinic. “I’m really happy about the grand opening. It’s pretty exciting.”
Elders, Councillors, band members and friends were on hand for the opening celebration as were the pride of Yellow Quill, soft ball stars sisters Megan and Rebecca Gurski. Rose Campeau hopes that the energy from the opening continues.
“It has been a really positive experience moving to this location and we have lots going on including hiring three summer students and three work experience students. We welcome all of our members to come down here and visit.”
