Two Saskatchewan educators recognized with national award

Nine educators to be honoured at gala during National Gathering for Indigenous Education

Hundreds of educators and supporters of Indigenous education from across Canada will gather at a gala ceremony in Calgary on November 13 to celebrate the recipients of the 2015 Guiding the Journey: Indigenous Educator Awards. The awards, presented by Indspire - the largest funder of Indigenous education outside the federal government, recognize the achievements of outstanding educators of Indigenous students.

Guiding the Journey honourees are acknowledged for having innovative teaching practices; advocatingfor updated resources and more cultural teachings in the curriculum; and helping Indigenous students reach their full potential. This year, a new award will be presented - the Indigenous Organization Award.

The nine recipients of 2015 Guiding the Journey: Indigenous Educator Awards are as follows:
  • Community Service: Dr. Monique Annette Giard, British Columbia
  • Community Service: Loretta C. Woodhouse, Manitoba
  • Culture, Language and Traditions: Elizabeth Aapak Fowler, Northwest Territories
  • Innovative Practice: Thomas B. Doherty, Ontario
  • Language, Culture and Traditions: Delvin Kanewiyakiho, Saskatchewan
  • Leadership: Mona Markwart, Saskatchewan
  • Partner in Indigenous Education: Elizabeth Gouthro, Alberta
  • Role Model: Celina Cada-Matasawagon, Ontario
  • Indigenous Organization Award: Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey, Nova Scotia

"These educators are exemplary in their innovation and dedication to helping First Nation, Inuit, and Métis children and youth succeed," said Roberta Jamieson, President and CEO of Indspire. "They are creating lasting change in the communities they serve and enriching the field of Indigenous education through their contributions."

The Guiding the Journey gala is part of Indspire's National Gathering for Indigenous Education, a conference taking place November 13-14 at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre. Over 500 attendees from across the country are expected to take part in more than three dozen workshops and presentations during the two-day conference, which will focus on increasing student achievement through holistic education.
