The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Executive is pledging support for the thousands of people who have been affected by the northern Alberta wildfires. The FSIN is requesting our member First Nations and Institutions to join in raising relief money to assist with efforts in helping northern Alberta evacuees.

The fire at Fort McMurray grew in size to around 300,000 hectares. Around 80,000 people were forced from their homes, and many of those homes burned down in the fire. Red Cross is accepting donations to help the evacuees. Flickr

“The devastating fire in northern Alberta and the town of Fort McMurray is one of the worst natural disasters in our time,” said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron. “The images and stories of loss are heart breaking. Our prayers go out to the families affected by the firestorm. The FSIN wants to thank those that have begun their efforts to assist in this crisis. We want to do whatever we can to help and plan to organize fundraising initiatives this week.”

“Our First Nation people in Saskatchewan have had first hand experiences with natural disasters like forest fires, flooding and tornadoes,” said Chief Cameron. “We know the feelings associated with losing your home, property and being forced to live in evacuation shelters. We are forever grateful when others helped and assisted us in times of need.”

The FSIN Staff will coordinate fundraising activities throughout the week and will forward the proceeds to the organizations helping evacuees during this difficult time.
