Donations needed for backpacks destined for SK kids

A non-profit that began 10 years ago in Alberta and expanded to Saskatchewan two years ago continues to help kids in need.

Stephen's Backpacks Society began in 2005 as the dream of Métis child Stephen McPhee of Airdrie, Alberta, when he learned that there were children who didn't have a home like he did.

"Every child should have their own home with grass to run on, their own bed to sleep in, and lots of toys," according to Stephen.

In 2006, Stephen and his family put together 15 backpacks that contained things like winter clothing, blankets, school supplies, books, and supplies specific to infants, children, and teenagers.

Now Stephen’s Backpacks needs your help to fill 500 + backpacks to be sent to kids from 0 - 18, as well as expectant mothers, all over Saskatchewan this Christmas.

Donations of socks, blankets, toiletries, toys and school supplies can be dropped off at the Courts of Praise Church at 2333 Herman Avenue in Saskatoon on Wednesdays from 3pm - 9 pm and Sundays from 9 am to 3 pm from now until December 13.   Donations can also be made online at www.stephensbackpacks.com, with the note, “designated for Saskatchewan kids.”

Since its inception, the organization has helped more than 30,000 children.
