Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Week took place at the University of Saskatchewan November 16 to 20.

Weeklong activities included a poster-making rally, speaking circles and various other awareness raising events.

Featured speakers were Pauline Muskego, Myrna LaPlante, Tala Tootoosis, Marcel Petit, U of S Professor Rob Innes, University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union President Jack Saddleback, Tori-Lynn Wanotch, Senator Lillian Dyck and Omeasoo Wahpisiw.

The week ended with a candlelight vigil on Friday afternoon.

The RCMP estimates there were 1,200 cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women between 1980 and 2012.

The newly elected Liberal government recently announced it will launch a national inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women by this summer.
