Commemorative walk for missing Megan Gallagher Sunday in Saskatoon

Sunday, September 19 marks the one-year anniversary of the last time Megan Gallagher, 30, was seen, as she left a friend’s house in Saskatoon. Her family is hosting a commemorative walk for her that day.
“Every day, Megan is missed, she is thought of, she is loved, she has not been forgotten,” her father Brian Gallagher said.
He remembers young Megan hanging out at Joe Gallagher Field, helping with batting practice and chasing foul balls to make enough money to buy herself a Gatorade.
“And she was one hell of a ball player herself,” Gallagher said. Joe Gallagher Field (1535 Avenue P South) is named after Megan’s grandfather and it will be the starting point for the walk Sunday at 9:45 a.m. There will be a prayer from Elder Rick Daniels and remarks from Mayor Charlie Clark. Participants will walk to the Amphitheatre on River Landing (414 Spadina Crescent East.) Lunch will be provided by Saskatchewan Polytechnic, from which Megan graduated with a Food and Beverage diploma.
The Saskatoon Police are investigating Megan’s disappearance as a homicide. The family is calling on anyone who has information about Megan and others who are missing to come forward.
“The silence is killing us because there are people out there that know things,” Gallagher said. “Every step we take is pounding Mother Earth and asking for a piece of resolution for us and all families that are missing people.”
They are being taken, they are not missing, Megan’s step-mother, Debbie Gallagher, said.
“People have to start speaking up because these invisible monsters are taking our children,” she said. “One feeling that comes to mind is being lost—not finding a place for this to fit into your day-to-day life. Unknowing. Wandering,” Brian Gallagher said. “There are moments where I didn’t know if I was going to survive.”
The ability to find “bright spots” everyday —whether it’s a child's smile or support from family or friends—is essential, “otherwise I wouldn’t make it through the unbearable moments,” he said.
The Gallaghers hope raising awareness through events like Megan’s walk will help prevent others from going missing in the future.
“Even if we never find Megan it has to stop,” Debbie Gallagher said.

Another event honouring MMIWG2S will be hosted by Iskwewuk E-wichiwitochik on October 4. The “Sisters In Spirit” walk, 6pm-8:30 p.m., will start at Saskatoon Civic Square (202 4th Avenue N) with speakers, followed by a police-escorted walk. Participants are asked to wear a mask.
