Art project gives voice to core neighbourhood residents

Ken Brevik experienced trauma and now suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Ken finds solace in art and creative expression. Creating art is a way to reduce some of the impact of PTSD on his life.  Living in near isolation, Ken says the 10 X 10 Art Project gives him a chance to venture out of his comfort zone to meet people.

ICM’s 10x10 Community Art Project is in its 7th year. Each February, sixty 10” X 10” canvases are handed out to residents of the Core Neighbourhood - a very diverse group in terms of age, culture, artistic expression, history, and lifestyle. Partners such as SCYAP, Open Door Society, St. Paul’s Healing Arts Program, The Gathering Place, Str8-Up, CUMFI and Saskatoon Native Arts Program also distribute canvases to their members.   The assignment: one month to complete a painting that will be part of a voice for the community.

ICM’s Art Coordinator Brenda Dreaver was hired to be a link with the artists & to help coordinate the 10 x 10 Art Project.  “The best moments in life are the opportunities we have to bring people together in celebration. The 10x10 community art project provides this occasion through art and colour.”
