Huge, life-changing, and everlasting.

These are just a few words one could use to describe the legacy of Gordon Tootoosis. It has been four years since his passing, but his passion lives on in the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company, which he co-founded with fellow actors Tantoo Cardinal and Kennetch Charlette in 1999.

And now, to honour that legacy, SNTC is not only honouring Tootoosis' life, but changing its name to reflect his contributions to the organization. 

On October 2nd, SNTC is holding a gala honouring Tootoosis and celebrating his life and legacy. His wife, children, and extended family will be in attendance, as well as acclaimed actress, singler, and friend to Tootoosis, Andrea Menard, who will host and perform. The evening will feature a combination of performances, video, and live tributes from his family, friends, fans, and former co-stars.

SNTC will also announce a new name for itself in honour of Gordon Tootoosis. Tootoosis was adamant about the importance of instilling pride, cultural identity, and artistic expression in Indigenous youth, and SNTC says the name change will reflect this passion for guidance. Tootoosis was the driving force behind the creation of SNTC's Circle of Voices Program, where youth aged 14 to 25 years old are mentored in theatre and cultural teachings. The program is now in its 13th year and has paved the way for SNTC to create the Playhouse Program for elementary age students and Theatre@Noon, which provides a creative outlet for at-risk youth.

The gala begins at 6 p.m. on October 2nd with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the program beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $55 each. Visit SNTC's website to purchase your tickets.
