Workshop builds next generation of artists

The Northern Spirits workshop takes place each November in Prince Albert. This year 25 youth were selected and from November 14 to 16th, the youth are divided into groups depending on their interest and they participated in workshops that consist of team building, live band, self esteem and touring of MBC Radio. Other sessions include LAB Soundworks with Lee Bell and an emcee session with Larissa Burnouf of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.
The live band and stage are open throughout the weekend for singers and stage hands. Interested singers have mentors available to them such as Kevin Joseph of Black Rain, Grant Kimbley of New Horizon plus Kerri English and Mitch Daigneault. Some others who assisted were Len Adam of Leonard Adam & Sons and Tristan Randhile.
Of course working with such a large group of youth can be a daunting and stressful task but when you have Sheryl Kimbley, Shauna Sayese and Trina Joseph of Musqua Entertainment, it will definitely be a finished product. These ladies have been the forefront of this program and the popular Voices of the North Showcase held each year at the Prince Albert Winter Festival.
This year’s special guest speaker, facilitator and entertainer was Supaman also known as Christian Parrish Takes A Gun. His "Prayer Loop Song" is one of the more popular uploads on youtube. The whole idea of the workshop is to bring forward those youth who want to take a lead role in one of the many areas of the show. The youth run the show themselves under the watchful eye of Musqua Entertainment and music mentors.
This year’s show will most likely be Saturday Feb 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm and producer Terri Ann Randhile and co producer Levi Morin have much work to do. The organizers, parents and chaperones would like to thank The Northern Spirits Youth, Partners Prince Albert Grand council, Meadow lake Tribal Council, Missinnipi Broadcasting Corporation, Northern Sports & Recreation District and Musqua Entertainment. Funders are Sask Culture, Northern Lights School Division #113, Areva and Cameco.
