Symposium: Utilizing Legislation to Capture Economic Development Opportunities

May 15, 2014

Saskatoon Inn

Saskatoon, SK

The symposium, hosted by the Kawacatoose First Nation, will provide information to other First Nations on the First Nations Oil and Gas and Moneys Management Act (FNOGMMA) and to share practical experience of opting into the act.

FNOGMMA is an alternate approach and opportunity for developing and creating economic opportunities in the natural resource sector. To capitalize on that, the objective of this symposium is for First Nations participants to identify common themes, priorities and insights that can assist them, in scoping their own approach.

"I am extending an invitation to all First Nations to bring awareness and share information on the Kawacatoose First Nation's experiences," says Chief Darin Poorman. "It's time for First Nations to begin benefiting from the development being undertaken within our territories, and by Kawacatoose being a partner in resource development, we can ensure that any development is undertaken in an environmentally sustainable manner."

The focus will be on sharing policy development, evidence based information and lessons learned. Participants will hear presentations from from speakers who are currently involved with on-reserve Oil and Gas Regulations, those who were involved in the development of FNOGMMA and information on the geology of Saskatchewan.
