Platforms of MN-S Treasurer candidates

As part of its MN-S Election coverage, Eagle Feather News contacted each candidate running for the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President. Each candidate was given an opportunity to submit a photo and respond to the same questions. Below are their unedited answers.

What is the role of the Treasurer for the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan?

The role of the Treasurer-Metis Nation is responsibility the managing the financial resources to meet the needs of the Saskatchewan Metis Nation Communities and report on these to the executive and also to the community as a whole.

What skills, qualifications, or background do you have that qualify you for the role of Treasurer of the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan?

Knowledge of the culture of Metis Nation – Saskatchewan.  I am currently a Treasurer of the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Financial Officers Association and have been active in this organization for over ten years. 

Education background includes Certified Management Accountant-Chartered Professional Accountant.  Two Diplomas in Business Administration and Accountancy received through Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology in conjunction with SIAST.

Work experience includes Management, Supervisory and leadership skills obtained at the following organizations:

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation – 5 years

SaskPolytechnic – 4 years Accounts Receivable Supervisor

Indian & Northern Affairs Canada – Funding Services 5 years.

Wappawekka Lumber – Finance Manager – 1 year

Peter Ballantyne Child & Family Services – Supervisor/Accountant – 5 years

Weyerhauser – Admin/Accounting – 4 years

Have you at any time been investigated for or convicted of fraud or breach of fiduciary duty? Have you ever declared bankruptcy?

I have not been investigated for or convicted of fraud or breach of fiduciary duty and have not declared bankruptcy.

What do you see as the top 3 fiscal priorities of the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan today?

The top 3 priorities for the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan include:

Rebuild the nation pride

Accountability, Communication & Transparency

Work together in Unity.

What would be your first priority for financial transparency/accountability of the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan?

Ensure the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan citizens are informed of any changes to policies within the financial policy manual and constitution.  Report released to the communities from Ernst & Young regarding the audit as soon as it is finished along with a report on the last 5 years of comparison. Also set in place a team to remove the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan from 3rd party control as it currently is now.

How will you provide accurate financial accounting information to the citizens of the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan?

Audit will be prepared and reviewed for accuracy and reported to the citizens of the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan.  A communication network will be set up for any questions.  Budgets will be set in place and variances analyzed for review.

Other Comments:

 I believe we have the capacity to move forward in good faith and want to congratulate all the candidates for caring about Metis Nation-Saskatchewan and letting their names stand to open interest from the citizens.  This election has shown that people do want to see the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan succeed and work for all the generations to come.
