One month later, national vigil keeps up the pressure

  • EFN Staff | March 26, 2014

Calls for a national inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women continue to cry out across Canada.

Tomorrow, a national vigil is planned to honour Loretta Saunders, an Inuk woman who was found murdered a month ago in Nova Scotia. The vigil coincides with the one-month anniversary of when her body was found.

At the time of her disappearance, Saunders was working on an undergraduate honours thesis researching three cases of missing and/or murdered Indigenous women in Nova Scotia.

As of today, vigils are planned in more than a dozen Canadian cities to continue to pressure the government for a public inquiry. There were also vigils across Canada, including Saskatoon, shortly after news of Saunders' death.

Additionally, the Nova Scotia Native Women's Association (NSNWA) has launched a Loretta Saunders Scholarship Fund. Funds will be for Indigenous women to study in Atlantic Canada.

Those wishing to donate can do so at any local credit union to Community Credit Union in Truro, Nova Scotia, Account #67630000; by sending a cheque care of Cheryl Maloney at the NSNWA, Box 805, Truro, N.S., B2N 5E8; or via PayPal or your bank account to lorettasaunderslegacy@gmail.com.

For more information on vigils and the scholarship, visit the vigil's event page.
