FSIN uses treaty right to hunt to continue annual gift of hearty meals

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Executive and the Prince Albert Grand Council is pleased to announce the delivery of traditional wild meat to those in need of food during this time of year. FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron will deliver the packaged meat to food banks and shelters across our Treaty territories this week starting with the Prince Albert Food Bank.
“We still depend on our Treaty Right to hunt, fish, trap and gather as a way to feed members of our communities. Many of us Treaty hunt to help feed the Elderly and the ones who are less fortunate,” said Chief Cameron, an avid hunter. “As Chief of the FSIN we started this important initiative in 2014. My late father always told me, ‘each time you kill an animal, give thanks, leave tobacco and always share the animals you kill with your people.’ Sharing food for many Indigenous people is a way of life.”

“About 90 per cent of our clients are Indigenous, and the vast majority who access our food are families and children,” said Wes Clark, executive director of the Prince Albert Food Bank. “The need is great, and our clients really appreciate receiving this traditional food.”
This week Chief Cameron will deliver the traditional wild meat to a shelter in North Battleford on Tuesday, December 13; a shelter in Yorkton on Wednesday, December 14; and to a soup kitchen in Regina on Thursday, December 15.
