Candidates declared for AFN election for national chief

Three men are seeking the job of National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN).

Today the AFN announced that the Chief Electoral Officer has received nominations for the following candidates: Perry Bellegarde, Leon Jourdain, and Ghislain Picard (who has been the interim spokesperson since Shawn Atleo resigned).

The election will take place December 10 during the AFN Special Chiefs Assembly taking place in Winnipeg December 9 to 11. The AFN says "due to extraordinary circumstances," the upcoming term of office for the National Chief will be three and a half years.

The National Chief must be electe by a majority of 60 per cent of the votes from the 639 First Nations communities that are recognized as members of the AFN.
