Back to Batoche to celebrate 130th anniversary of Batoche Resistance

The organizers of Back to Batoche Festival Days recently announced that this year’s Festival is on track with celebrations that recognize the 130th anniversary of the Batoche Resistance and the 200th anniversary of the red Métis flag, a proud symbol of Métis heritage.

“This year’s festival is already shaping up to be a memorable event,” said Festival Chair, Robert Doucette. “From the release of 130 Monarch butterflies, to the raising of the red Métis flag, this year will be like no other.”

According to Festival coordinator, Sandra Youngchief, loyal festival goers have been making camping reservations since January which means the campsite is expected to be overflowing and anyone who hasn’t made a reservation should do so soon to avoid disappointment.

“This year, the U. of S. SUNTEP students have partnered with us to provide three days of fun-filled children’s programming, which we couldn’t be more thrilled about,” said Youngchild. “This is a first for Back to Batoche and we are most grateful for their interest in working with us to ensure our kids are active and entertained.”

As Canada’s largest Métis cultural event and Saskatchewan’s premier Métis festival, Back to Batoche welcomes visitors from across Canada and the United States for the celebration of Métis culture, traditions, and heritage. Organizers are expecting to welcome more than 5,000 people daily. The event runs July 16-19.
