Arrest made in brutal attack

  • EFN Staff | June 30, 2014

An arrest has been made in a horrific attack that left a Prince Albert woman seriously injured.

Prince Albert Police have arrested and charged 29-year-old Leslie Ivan Roderick Black with attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault in connection to the June 1 assault on 47-year-old Marlene Bird.

Police say Bird was known to the accused and would be considered a "casual acquaintance." Police say the incident occurred during the early morning hours when she was left alone with the accused at the location where she was later found.

Marlene Bird continues to slowly recover in an Edmonton hospital.

Bird spoke to Edmonton police, as she is recovering in an Edmonton hospital. She suffered extensive facial injuries that required facial reconstructive surgery. She was also burnt, which resulted in the amputation of both her legs.

Black is currently being held in custody and will make a court appearance on Wednesday in Prince Albert provincial court.
